Commonwealth Health Ministers will meet for their annual meeting in May 2022, to discuss lessons learnt from COVID-19 responses to build recovery, improve the resilience of health systems and advance UHC goals.

Commonwealth Ministers of Health will meet on 17th and 19th May 2022 for their annual summit.

The 34th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting (CHMM) will be held virtually under the theme, ‘The Road to COVID-19 Recovery: Lessons Learnt for Building Health System Resilience to advance UHC and Global Health Security in the Commonwealth’ and aims to facilitate collaboration on key health priorities as the world recovers from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It will give health ministers the opportunity to share knowledge and good practices, lessons learnt, and explore innovative approaches that can be adopted by member countries on challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine inequity, and strategies to bolster health systems.

This meeting will also build on existing commitments from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2018 and the CHMM meeting in May 2021 which include advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goals, addressing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), cervical cancer, malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), as well as recent COVID-19 response.

This year’s meeting is being chaired by Jamaica’s Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Dr Christopher Tufton.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland QC, will deliver opening remarks while the World Health Organization Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom, will deliver a keynote speech.

Outcomes on policy proposals from this meeting are expected to inform discussions at the upcoming CHOGM in Kigali, Rwanda, in June 2022.
