The first Commonwealth Environment and Climate Ministers Meeting (CECMM) will be held on 21 September 2023 (3PM - 6PM New York time), alongside the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 78) in New York.
The meeting will provide an important opportunity for member countries to discuss ways to enhance action around climate change and the preservation of land, oceans and biodiversity. The discussions will also focus on strengthening implementation for enabling Commonwealth member countries achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Commonwealth members will be able to engage with the incoming COP Presidency of the UNFCCC on the key issues for discussion at the upcoming COP28 meeting and ensure that Commonwealth voices are heard. They will also have a platform to share country experiences, best practices and lessons learned in addressing the inter-linked challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification, ocean degradation and energy transition, and to consider potential ways to strengthen Commonwealth collaboration.
The meeting will also receive updates on various initiatives that support members’ delivery of their climate and environment commitments, such as the Commonwealth Living Lands Charter and Call to Action on Living Lands (CALL), the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub (CCFAH), the Commonwealth Sustainable Energy Transition Agenda (CSET) and the Commonwealth Blue Charter (CBC).
