In an age where digital content drives public opinion, the advent of deepfake technology—synthetic media created using artificial intelligence—has raised unprecedented concerns around misinformation, privacy, national security, and the erosion of trust in digital evidence. While this technology has legitimate uses, its misuse poses a severe threat to individuals, institutions, and democratic processes.

This virtual webinar is part of the ongoing work of the Commonwealth AI Consortium under its research and innovation working group. We aim to demystify the concept of deepfakes, analyse real-world implications, and equip stakeholders with insights to navigate the threats and opportunities presented by this disruptive technology.
We will look at:
- introducing participants to the technology behind deepfakes
- showcasing real-world case studies of both malicious and ethical uses
- exploring the legal, ethical and cybersecurity implications
- discussing countermeasures, tools and the role of digital literacy
- encouraging cross-sector dialogue on regulation and responsible innovation
Expected outcomes:
-
increased public understanding of deepfakes and their risks
-
strengthened awareness of tools and techniques to detect manipulated media
-
empowered educators, professionals, and citizens to identify and report misuse
-
explore a roadmap for future action on legislation, research and public education
