The annual Commonwealth Diplomats Induction Programme will be run virtually for the first time from 3-5 November.
Normally restricted to about 25 London-based senior diplomats, this year’s sessions will be open to officials outside of London, as well as members of Commonwealth accredited organisations.
The popular programme, developed by the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Commonwealth Foundation and the Commonwealth of Learning, includes three days of intensive interactive seminars led by international experts and leaders.
Participants will have the opportunity to hear from former and current Heads of Government, top officials from international institutions, and acclaimed scholars.
Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, said: “The Commonwealth Diplomats Induction Programme, now in its 37th year, is an invaluable opportunity to learn about this unique institution and its vital work, history, organisations and relationship with the rest of the world.
“Delegates will also have the opportunity to learn from world class speakers, build lasting professional networks, exchange views, develop friendships and learn about the Commonwealth way of caring and sharing in a multilateral setting. The discussions are extremely relevant given the challenging international environment at the moment.”
Topics on the agenda include the Commonwealth intergovernmental systems, global crises and cooperation, and multilateralism in the 21st century, among others.
The course will also cover new trends in digital diplomacy, including the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and virtual reality, which have become increasingly important in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Participation in the programme is secured through nominations made by Governments or accredited organisations. More than 900 diplomats have benefited from the exclusive course since its inception 36 years ago.
