The Commonwealth Secretariat and World Leadership Alliance-Club de Madrid (WLA-CdM) have entered into an agreement that commits the two organisations to work in closer partnership to promote peace and good governance in the countries they serve.
The Commonwealth Secretariat and World Leadership Alliance-Club de Madrid (WLA-CdM) have entered into an agreement that commits the two organisations to work in closer partnership to promote peace and good governance in the countries they serve.
Secretaries-General Patricia Scotland and María Elena Agüero have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining the areas of co-operation.
Patricia Scotland said: “By formalising a closer working relationship with the World Leadership Alliance Club de Madrid we are adding breadth and depth to the overlapping areas of our work on social, economic and political development that contribute to all our citizens being able to enjoy the benefits of inclusive, fair and peaceful democratic progress.
“The partnership offers opportunities to share knowledge and offer practical guidance to enhance our work on building peace and democracy through respect and understanding, in accordance with the values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter to which all our member countries have committed themselves.”
The objective of World Leadership Alliance-Club de Madrid, the largest forum of former Presidents and Prime Ministers, is to strengthen democratic values, good governance and the well-being of citizens across the globe.
María Elena Agüero said: “Through this partnership, we will be able to strengthen our engagement in the diverse pool of countries that make up the Commonwealth. WLA-CdM Members, some of which come from Commonwealth member countries, stand ready to make available their experience and collective leadership to join forces in the achievement of inclusion, sustainable development, good governance and peace.”
Under the terms of the MoU, both organisations agree to work together to:
- support a rule-based world order to advance the sustainable development goals;
- build and sustain peace and good governance; and
- collaborate in the areas of respect and understanding, inter-faith dialogue and countering violent extremism.
The cooperation will build on the strengths of both organisations so that there can be enhanced co-ordination of their programmes of engagement and on projects addressing areas of mutual concern and towards shared objectives.
