The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Honourable Patricia Scotland KC, has received an award for championing prosperity across Africa at a ceremony in Accra, Ghana on 26 January 2024.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General is the first recipient of the Global African Champion Award, which was presented to her by the President of Ghana, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The ceremony was attended by heads of government from Africa and the Caribbean, other leading political figures, senior policymakers, technocrats, civil society representatives, academics and business executives.
Accepting the award, the Secretary-General said:
“Being recognised today with this prestigious award is not only amazing but also a poignant reminder of the responsibility that accompanies such honours. It propels me to work even harder, to continue doing what I believe I do best – serving humanity.”
“This service is not just a duty but a privilege, one that I embrace wholeheartedly. Looking ahead, I am filled with hope and optimism. I envision a future that is not only prosperous, but also kind and just. A future where the Commonwealth, and the world at large, thrive in harmony, where our differences are celebrated, and our commonalities unite us.”
The Prosperity Champions Awards ceremony was a part of the three-day Africa Prosperity Dialogues 2024 event, organised by the Africa Prosperity Network and sponsored by the Africa Free Continental Trade Area (AfCFTA), a platform for accelerating and improving trade between African nations.
Other award recipients included the President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, who received the Global African Leadership Award and the President of Cote d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, who was presented with the Nation Builder Award.
In addition, Prof. Benedict Okechukwu Oramah, President of Afreximbank, received the Financial Leadership Award; Julius Mwale, founder of Mwale Medical and Technology City, was presented with the Social Infrastructure Award; Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, also known as Mr Eazi, received the Young Entrepreneur Award and Mohamed M Abou El Enein was presented with the Industrialist of the Year Award.
