Commonwealth Secretary-General urges restraint and a thorough investigation into killings in Mozambique

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, has condemned the killing of Elvino Dias, the lawyer representing Mozambican politician Venâncio Mondlane, and Paulo Guambe, a PODEMOS party official, who were tragically gunned down in Maputo.

On behalf of the Commonwealth, Secretary-General Scotland expressed heartfelt condolences. She said:

“My thoughts are with their families at this difficult time. I urge relevant authorities to expedite thorough investigations and to bring the perpetrators to justice."

“I condemn all forms of violence and call upon all political party leaders and their supporters to continue to uphold principles of peace, respect for the rule of law, and to prioritise national unity. The stability of the nation should be paramount."

Secretary-General Scotland reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s enduring support and solidarity for the people of Mozambique.
