In a stride towards advancing the digital economy and e-commerce in the Pacific region, the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda (CCA), the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) have joined forces to organise a three-day workshop on 'Effective Legal Frameworks for Building the Digital Economy'.
The workshop opened today in Suva, Fiji, and is running from October 18 to 20, 2023. It brings together over 40 participants including key policymakers, governmental officials, senior ICT experts, and legal reform officers involved in the development of legal frameworks related to digital trade.
Opening the workshop virtually, Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General Dr Arjoon Suddhoo said:
“These three days promise to be filled with illuminating and productive discussions on the various legislative areas of focus that are required to work symbiotically in forging sustainable and resilient digital economies within the Pacific region.”
The training draws contributions from regional and international agencies, including the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the International Standards Organization (ISO), the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and more. Participants will be addressing key legislative building blocks and essential legislative areas that support the digital economy, including electronic transactions, data protection & cross-border data flows, electronic payment & taxation, fintech & regulatory sandboxing, telecommunications, cybersecurity, consumer protection, competition, intellectual property, digital identity and authentication, customs and border management/trade facilitation, and quality infrastructure.
The workshop is a part of the Pacific E-commerce Initiative, a multi-stakeholder partnership dedicated to promoting sustainable growth and poverty eradication in the Pacific region. E-commerce is a central focus of the Pacific Aid-for-Trade Strategy 2020-2025.
This training is a testament to the commitment of the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda and partners to strengthen the digital economy in the Pacific by creating effective and cohesive legal frameworks. It aligns with the vision of the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda to boost trade and investment links across the Commonwealth.
