Commonwealth experts on migration and development to examine the challenges and opportunities for Around 30 migration and development experts from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific will attend a meeting in Kingston, Jamaica from 2-4 July to examine the costs and benefits of migration to small states and to make practical suggestions about mechanisms small states can employ to realise greater benefits from migration.
The meeting which is organised by the Commonwealth Secretariat in partnership with the will bring together of government officials, policy makers, academics and representatives of regional and international organisations will be opened by AJ Nicholson, Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade.
It will focus on some of the key migration issues for small states including international recruitment, diaspora remittances and investment, entrepreneurship and innovation. It will also examine government responses to migration diaspora engagement policies.
In addition, specific research on the challenges and opportunities posed by migration for Guyana, Jamaica, Tonga and Samoa, Lesotho and the Gambia will be presented at the meeting.
