Speaking on the recent violence in Sierra Leone, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, said:
“I was deeply concerned to learn that some individuals broke into the military armoury at the Wilberforce barracks in Freetown. Together with ECOWAS and other regional and global institutions, I condemn these acts of violence.
“These recent events have saddened the Commonwealth family, particularly now as the government and opposition, together with key democratic institutions and stakeholders, of Sierra Leone are engaged in a sincere, meaningful and fruitful dialogue that will strengthen unity, peace, constitutional order, democratic governance and national development.
“The courage, resilience, integrity and love that make this nation so special demand that we nourish and protect stability.
“I offer the Commonwealth’s continuous and full support to HE President Maada Bio and all leaders. We will continue to facilitate the dialogue process in Sierra Leone, which was started in August 2023. I share the hopes of millions across Sierra Leone, Africa and the world that peace will be restored and maintained.”
