Gender equality
In November 2018, the Secretariat worked with Barbados to help improve women’s participation and leadership in politics.
Human rights
The Secretariat is helping Barbados set up an organisation to help it promote, monitor and report on human rights.
Law reform
The Secretariat is helping Barbados to strengthen its laws on internet crime and internet security.
In 2016, the Secretariat gave Barbados advice on creating effective laws and ways to manage virtual (computer-generated) currencies. This will help Barbados combat terrorist financing and money laundering.
Debt management
The Secretariat helped Barbados record its securities (a financial instrument such as bonds or stocks) more efficiently on the Commonwealth debt management system. It also helped Barbados strengthen policies and institutions to better manage its public debt.
Natural resources
The Secretariat helped Barbados reform regulations to improve management of its petroleum sector.
After Secretariat help in 2015-16, Barbados signed an agreement on maritime boundaries with Saint Lucia.

Barbados is a member of the following Action Groups: Coral Reef Protection and Restoration, Commonwealth Clean Ocean Alliance, Marine Protected Areas, Ocean Acidification, Ocean and Climate Change, Ocean Observation, and Sustainable Aquaculture
Connectivity Agenda
Barbados is a member of the Digital and Regulatory Connectivity cluster of the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda. The Connectivity Agenda is a platform for countries to exchange best practices and experiences to trade and investment and undertake domestic reform.
Barbados in the Commonwealth
Austin Ardinel Chesterfield Clarke was born in Saint James, Barbados, in July 1934. He won the 2003 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize with his novel, The Polished Hoe.
