Secretariat support for Malta
Human rights
In February and June 2018, the Commonwealth Small States Office in Geneva helped Malta engage with UN organisations.
The Secretariat advised on building skills to improve Malta’s participation in the United Nation’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.
Youth
The Secretariat helped Malta improve expertise and qualifications in youth work. It also helped build youth work skills and practice.
Trade
The Secretariat helped Malta sign and start using agreements with other countries to make its trade more competitive.
Small states
A Secretariat expert worked with the Government of Malta to help it set up its Small States Centre of Excellence. The centre was launched in April 2018. It helps build skills and partnerships among small states.
Blue Charter
Malta is a member of the Marine Protected Areas, Ocean Acidification, Ocean and Climate Change, Ocean Observation and Sustainable Coastal Fisheries Action Groups.
Connectivity Agenda
Malta is a member of the Physical and Digital Connectivity clusters of the Commonwealth Connectivity Agenda. The Connectivity Agenda is a platform for countries to exchange best practices and experiences to trade and investment and undertake domestic reform.
Malta in the Commonwealth
Malta hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2015.
The Commonwealth Network of Information Technology for Development (COMNET-IT) has its secretariat in Valletta. COMNET-IT has championed the development of the Commonwealth Action Programme for the Digital Divide.
