Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands are two parallel chains of volcanic islands and small coral atolls in the south-western Pacific. The country is mainly mountainous and covered in forests, although it has some extensive plains. Solomon Islands’ nearest neighbours are Vanuatu to the south-east and Papua New Guinea to the west.

Elections support

The Commonwealth sent a mission to promote discussions in Solomon Islands on how the country can improve women’s participation in politics.

In April 2019, the Commonwealth observed and reported on Solomon Islands’ general elections.

In September 2019, Solomon Islands hosted a Commonwealth Election Professionals (CEP) Initiative training. Participants shared experience and good practice on staffing for elections.

The Secretariat supports Solomon Islands to deliver climate action by building its capacity to access international climate finance through the Climate Finance Access Hub and supporting the development of robust climate policies.

At the Regional Consultation for Asia-Pacific in Singapore in May 2019, the Secretariat supported Solomon Islands in expanding its trade with other Commonwealth countries.

Solomon Islands in the Commonwealth

Solomon Islander Bobby Siarani was named 2019 Commonwealth Youth Award Winner for the Pacific Region. He founded a biogas initiative to address waste disposal and provide clean energy.
