Sport for Life is a social enterprise which links sport, education, recreation, health and governments to align community, provincial/territorial, and national systems and programming. It aims to improve the quality of sport and to increase the development of physical literacy - the motivation, confidence, competence and knowledge to make appropriate physical activity part of one’s life.
The Programme
In 2018 Sport for Life and Momentum IT Group partnered to create an online cloud-based management platform called PLAYBuilder - a sport and physical activity curriculum software that is designed to develop physical literacy. We do this with online content aimed at long-term development in sport and physical activity.
We have curated a package of resources for the Commonwealth Moves initiative. This includes:
Each resource promotes the safety and health of participants with specific considerations:
- keep a distance of 2 meters;
- avoid sharing equipment;
- disinfect equipment before and after use;
- wash hands with soap and water before and after play; and
- use visual guides for spacing such as tape, ropes, signs, etc.

The Elderly Fitness program was created by Active Mauritius to raise awareness of the benefits of physical activity among elderly populations. With COVID-19 forcing a pause on face to face programs, these online resources, created in collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat, are even more important to help the elderly stay active. There are also long-term benefits for those who are not able to travel to face to face programs.
Many exercise resources are aimed at younger populations and so we hope these online resources can be used and enjoyed in other countries too. By delivering the face to face and online program, we are doing our part to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Programme
- Allows older people to stay active in the safety and comfort of their homes.
- Is based on the principle that physical activity throughout the lifetime is essential to maintaining physical and mental health.
- Has already been tested and has proven extremely popular since it began in 2018 in Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The Commonwealth Secretariat has partnered with Pro Sport Development (PSD)- an award-winning social enterprise dedicated to using sport for the holistic development of children and youth and the Martha Farrell Foundation (MFF), which supports practical interventions to achieve a gender-equality.
Together they created the Sport Against Gender Inequality (SAGI) online resource. The programme leverages the diverse expertise, experience and resources of the three organisations in order to share evidence-based approaches with practitioners.
The Programme
- The SAGI online resource has been adapted from MFF and PSD’s successful, evidence-based programme called Kadam Badhate Chalo. KBC is a youth-led programme, in which adolescent girls and boys work together towards ending sex and gender-based discrimination and violence within their own communities.
- SAGI aims to help practitioners approach the issues of gender-based violence and stereotyping with adolescent participants, using sports-based activities to create community-based leaders that can champion gender equality.
- SAGI has modified the KBC activities to enable them to be delivered either online or in-person. It provides considerations for virtual participation while keeping in mind online safeguarding guidelines and ensuring all public health and safety guidelines relating to COVID-19, including wearing face coverings, maintaining social distancing and ensuring hand hygiene, are followed for in-person delivery.

Move4Life was developed by a team of Sport for Development and online learning practitioners with experience of working in the sport and education sectors internationally. Our holistic sessions are designed to promote physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. Move4Life also encourages participants to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In collaboration with the Commonwealth Secretariat, we have developed the Move4Life series of activity sessions. The initiative is responsive to the current challenges including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The programme
- Move4Life is a specialised play-based educational resource built on existing resources, namely, Football4Life, Basketball4Life, Netball4Life and PE4Life.
- Sessions link life-skills such as self-esteem, resilience, anxiety and fear, healthy living, decision-making and communication with movement and sports skills such as catching, throwing, dribbling and shooting.
- The activity sessions have been designed to take place at home or at sports fields, and can be adapted for varying numbers of participants and to meet national public health restrictions (e.g. social distancing, personal hygiene).
- The activities can be practiced by individuals on their own, with family members or in small groups, if allowed.
- Activities require limited space, generally with common equipment around the house or basic equipment such as balls, hoops, and ropes. Equipment can also be created using materials found around the home.
- The Move4Life resource also offers guidelines and recommendations on important topics associated with the physical and mental well-being of participants such as health and safety, safeguarding including staying safe online, and monitoring and evaluation of the resource.
